Frequently Asked Questions

Are parents allowed to sit in on lessons?
Yes. You probably will find that your child pays better attention and learns more effectively with one on one interaction with the teacher. However, parents are always welcome to observe lessons or wait in an unused music room.

Will I have to purchase materials?
The initial $50.00 registration package covers all materials for the first six months. After that, additional lesson materials will need to be purchased from time to time. These charges may be added to the following month's tuition or may be directly purchased online or from a local music store. We will discuss your preferred method of obtaining new materials at registration, but these costs are nominal and should not pose a burden for the student or parent.

How much time will I be expected to spend practicing?
On average, a minimum of 30 minutes a day, 5-6 days a week. Younger students will practice for a shorter period of time, and more advanced students usually will practice longer in order to master more complex pieces.

Is it necessary to have a piano at my house?
Yes, either a piano or a keyboard is necessary for daily practice unless you have access to one somewhere else on a daily basis. A piano is the instrument of choice for students studying longer than one year.

Instruments should be located in a quiet room away from televisions, computers, and other distractions.

Will I have the chance to perform in recitals and festivals?
Yes. As a member of the Music Teachers National Association, I can provide information throughout the year as performance opportunities arise and help students work toward goals for these performances.

In addition during the school year Witherspoon Music Studio offers a once a month informal dinner and performance opportunity that is free to students. See the section on Friday Night Live (FNL) for more information.
